SWIFT vs SEPA: What Indian Businesses Need to Know (2026)

When receiving international payments from European and UK clients, you'll encounter two systems: SWIFT and SEPA. They work very differently, and understanding which one your client uses determines how fast you receive payment and at what cost.

What Is SWIFT

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is the global messaging network used for international bank-to-bank transfers between countries in different regions.

Key characteristics:

  • Works between any two banks in any countries in the world
  • Requires a SWIFT/BIC code for identification
  • Passes through 1-3 correspondent banks between sender and recipient
  • Timeline: 2-5 business days
  • Each correspondent bank may deduct a fee ($5-$25) from the transfer
  • Sender's bank charges international wire fee ($15-$45) When SWIFT applies for Indian businesses: USD from US clients, GBP from UK clients (when not using a UK VBA), AUD from Australian clients, JPY from Japanese clients, and all other non-SEPA currencies.

What Is SEPA

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a European banking integration that makes EUR transfers between SEPA member countries as fast and cheap as domestic transfers.

Key characteristics:

  • Only EUR currency
  • Only between SEPA member country banks (EU + UK + Norway + Switzerland + Iceland + Liechtenstein)
  • Uses IBAN and BIC (simpler than SWIFT routing)
  • Timeline: 1-2 business days (SEPA Credit Transfer)
  • Low or zero cost for sender (same as domestic transfer)
  • No correspondent bank chain When SEPA applies for Indian businesses: EUR payments from clients in EU countries, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, and other SEPA members.

How This Affects Your Playto Pay VBA Setup

EUR VBA (IBAN): Your Playto Pay EUR VBA has an IBAN, which is the SEPA identifier. EU clients sending EUR use SEPA Credit Transfer to your IBAN. This is domestic for them — fast, cheap, no correspondent bank risk.

USD VBA (US routing + account): Your Playto Pay USD VBA uses US domestic wire routing. US clients sending USD send a domestic ACH or wire — also domestic for them, fast and cheap.

The result: With Playto Pay VBAs, both your US clients (USD) and your EU clients (EUR) send what feels like a domestic transfer to them. You get the speed benefits without them paying international wire fees.

Practical Guidance for Your Client Conversations

For EU clients (Germany, France, Netherlands, etc.):

"Please send EUR via SEPA Credit Transfer to our EUR IBAN: [IBAN]. This should arrive in 1-2 business days with no transfer fees on your end."

For UK clients (post-Brexit, still in SEPA for EUR):

UK left the EU but remains in SEPA. UK clients can still send EUR via SEPA. For GBP: UK clients use your Playto Pay GBP VBA (sort code + account) for a domestic UK BACS/CHAPS transfer.

For clients asking if they should use SWIFT or SEPA:

"If you're sending EUR from a European bank, SEPA is faster and cheaper for you. If you're sending USD or another currency, use the USD VBA details."

Why SEPA Is Better Than SWIFT EUR for Indian Businesses

Some EU clients might default to sending EUR via SWIFT (international wire) rather than SEPA (domestic EUR transfer). This is slower and has correspondent bank deduction risk.

Always request SEPA for EUR receipts. Provide your IBAN. If a client asks for SWIFT details for EUR: clarify that SEPA Credit Transfer to your IBAN is the correct method for EUR.

FAQ

What is the difference between SWIFT and SEPA for Indian businesses? SWIFT is the global wire network (any currency, any country, 2-5 days, correspondent bank risk). SEPA is the European domestic EUR transfer network (EUR only, 1-2 days, no correspondent risk, lower cost for sender).

Can EU clients use SEPA to pay an Indian business? Yes. EU clients send EUR via SEPA to your Playto Pay EUR VBA (IBAN). The transfer is domestic for them. You receive EUR in your VBA; Playto Pay converts to INR at mid-market and settles daily.

Is UK in SEPA? Yes for EUR. UK left the EU but remains a SEPA member for EUR transfers. UK clients can send EUR via SEPA. For GBP payments: use Playto Pay GBP VBA (UK sort code + account) for domestic UK transfer.
