How to Invoice International Clients from India: Complete Practical Guide (2026)

Sending your first international invoice from India involves more than putting numbers in a document. This guide covers everything: what to include, how to handle GST, what currency to use, how to structure payment options, and how to ensure the money actually arrives in your Indian bank account.

Step 1: Choose Your Invoice Currency

Rule: Invoice in the client's currency, not INR.

Client LocationInvoice In
United StatesUSD
United KingdomGBP
European UnionEUR
UAE / Middle EastAED or USD
Australia / New ZealandUSD (or AUD if they request)
CanadaUSD (or CAD if they request)
SingaporeUSD
JapanUSD

Never invoice in INR for international clients unless they specifically request it. It creates unnecessary FX conversion burden for them and means they see a number that doesn't make sense in their local context.

Step 2: Invoice Numbering

Use a consistent, sequential format. This helps with your records, their AP system, and FIRA matching.

Recommended format: [CompanyCode]-[Year]-[Sequential]

Example: ACME-2026-0042

Step 3: GST Treatment on International Invoices

International service revenue = Export of Services = Zero-rated IGST under LUT.

Before sending your first international invoice:

  1. Register for GST if total annual turnover (all income) exceeds ₹20 lakh
  2. File Letter of Undertaking (LUT) on GST portal before the financial year begins
  3. Once LUT is filed: zero-rated treatment applies to all international service invoices On the invoice itself, include:

"Export of Services — IGST @ 0% (Zero Rated under Section 16 of IGST Act, 2017 — LUT No: [Your LUT Reference] for FY 2025-26)"

If you don't have GST registration yet: For income below ₹20 lakh threshold, you're not required to register. Simply omit the GST line.
