5 Reasons Your International Payment Is Delayed in India and How to Fix Each (2026)

International payment delays are one of the most frustrating operational problems for Indian businesses. Client paid. You need the money. It's not there. Here are the five most common delay causes and exactly what to do about each.

Reason 1: Correspondent Bank Congestion

What it is: Most international wires travel through 1-3 correspondent banks between your client's bank and your Indian bank or gateway. Each correspondent bank has a queue. During high-volume periods (month-end, pre-holiday, fiscal quarter-end), queues back up.

How to spot it: Payment was sent 4+ business days ago. MT103 shows it left sender's bank. Your bank shows nothing received yet. No error codes.

How to fix it:

  • Ask your client to request a SWIFT gpi trace (real-time wire tracking) from their bank
  • Your bank's FOREX desk can also initiate a trace using the SWIFT reference
  • Usually self-resolves in 1-3 additional business days How to prevent it permanently: Route client payments to your Playto Pay USD/GBP/EUR/AED VBA. Your client sends domestically (US client to US bank). No correspondent chain. Same-day to next-day arrival.

Reason 2: AML/Compliance Hold at Any Bank in the Chain

What it is: Anti-money-laundering systems at your client's bank, a correspondent bank, or your Indian bank flagged the transaction for manual review. Common triggers: first wire to India, large amount, mismatched business description.

How to spot it: Wire shows in MT103 as "pending" or "held for review" at a specific bank in the chain.

How to fix it:

  • Your client contacts their bank's compliance team with documentation: your invoice, service agreement, business relationship confirmation
  • Your Indian bank's FOREX desk may need the same documentation on your end
  • Resolution: 3-7 business days after documentation is provided How to prevent it: For recurring clients: have them add you as an approved international beneficiary in their banking portal. Pre-registered beneficiaries bypass most AML review queues.

Reason 3: Public Holidays in Sender's Country or India

What it is: International wires don't process on banking holidays in ANY country in the routing chain. A wire sent on Wednesday in the US before a Thursday US public holiday sits until the following Friday.

How to spot it: Check the calendar. Sender confirms they sent on a specific date. That date (or the days following) includes a public holiday in the sending country or India.

How to fix it: Nothing to do but wait. The wire will process on the next available banking day.

How to prevent it: For time-sensitive payments: ask clients to initiate wire 5-7 business days before you need the funds, not 2-3. Build holiday buffer into payment terms.

Reason 4: Wrong or Incomplete Beneficiary Details

What it is: Your client entered incorrect or incomplete bank details when initiating the wire. The most common errors: transposed digits in account number, missing SWIFT code, wrong beneficiary name (abbreviated or formal name mismatch).

How to spot it: MT103 shows wire left sender's bank. No further routing. Wire may be returned to sender or held at first correspondent bank.

How to fix it:

  • Get MT103 from your client
  • Compare beneficiary details in MT103 to your actual account details
  • If wrong: your client initiates wire recall/correction with their bank (5-10 days)
  • If returned to sender: client resends with correct details How to prevent it: Send a formatted bank details confirmation email with every invoice: company name exactly as registered, account number, routing/sort code, SWIFT/BIC. Include: "Please confirm these details before initiating the transfer."

Reason 5: Your Indian Bank's Internal Processing Queue

What it is: The wire has arrived at your Indian bank's correspondent account (nostro account) but hasn't been posted to your individual account yet due to internal processing backlog.

How to spot it: Your bank's FOREX desk can confirm funds are in their nostro account but not yet credited to you. This means the delay is entirely internal to your bank.

How to fix it: Contact your bank's FOREX desk directly (not general customer service). Request urgent posting of the incoming wire using the MT103 reference. Usually resolved same day or next day once escalated to the right person.

How to prevent it: Maintain an active relationship with your bank's trade finance or FOREX team. Banks prioritize clients whose relationship managers know them.

The Structural Fix: VBA-Based Payment Collection

All five delay reasons above share a root cause: routing international payments through the SWIFT correspondent bank network to your Indian bank.

Playto Pay** VBA eliminates reasons 1, 3, 4, and 5:**

  • US client sends to US bank (domestic wire — no correspondent chain)
  • UK client sends to UK bank (domestic)
  • EU client sends EUR SEPA (1 business day, no correspondent chain)
  • UAE client sends AED domestically
  • Playto Pay converts and credits your Indian bank daily Result: "International payment delayed" becomes a rare exception, not a regular expectation.

FAQ

Why is my international wire taking longer than expected to reach India? Most likely cause: correspondent bank queue (self-resolves 1-3 days), AML hold (needs documentation, 3-7 days), or public holiday in routing chain (wait). Get MT103 from client to identify which.

How do I speed up an international wire that's stuck? Get MT103. Contact your Indian bank's FOREX desk with the SWIFT reference. Ask your client to initiate a gpi trace from their bank. These two actions typically resolve most delays within 1-2 business days.

Does using a VBA eliminate international wire delays? For most delays: yes. VBA converts international payments to domestic wires for your client. Domestic wires arrive same day or next day, not 2-7 days.
